Precursors to the concerto for solo instrument and ensemble, concerti a quattro were written for ensembles in which most or all of the instrumental parts were doubled. Michael Talbot writes in his informative liner notes that these concerti "favored a brilliant, flamboyant style of writing in which the outer parts - first violins and bass instruments - were emphasized at the expense of inner parts.
